Preparing for your first hike is an exciting step into the outdoors. With the right mindset and a bit of planning, you’ll be ready to enjoy the journey and discover nature’s beauty. From understanding which app we use for all of our hikes to getting the right snacks in your bag to fuel the day. We have you covered!

1. Planning your route using AllTrails!
The AllTrails app is a comprehensive tool for hikers, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts, offering detailed trail maps, reviews, and difficulty ratings. It helps users discover trails that suit their preferences, track progress with GPS, and stay safe with offline maps. It’s important for planning, navigating, and ensuring an enjoyable, well-prepared outdoor adventure.
2. Check the weather!
Checking the weather using a reliable source like Mountain Weather Forecasts, especially at different heights, is crucial for safety (especially when hiking up mountains) and planning in outdoor activities like hiking. Weather conditions can change rapidly with altitude, creating colder temperatures, stronger winds, and reduced visibility higher up, even if it’s calm below. Storms or fog can develop suddenly, increasing risks of hypothermia or getting lost. Knowing the forecast at all levels helps you prepare appropriately with gear and clothing, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable adventure.
3. Now choose your attire ...
Choosing the correct attire for hiking after checking the weather is vital for comfort, safety, and performance. Proper clothing protects you from hypothermia in cold or wet conditions and overheating in warm weather. Layers allow temperature regulation, while waterproof gear shields against rain. Wearing the right attire ensures you stay prepared for sudden weather changes and can fully enjoy your hike.
4. Parking!
When parking for a hike, choose a safe, designated spot to avoid causing hazards or inconvenience. Be considerate of local farmers by not blocking gates or access points, as these are essential for their daily work and emergency access. Blocking entrances can delay vital tasks like feeding animals or harvesting crops. Respect “no parking” signs and avoid damaging verges or private property. Responsible parking ensures positive relationships with locals and preserves the area for future outdoor enthusiasts.
5. Packing your snacks (the most important part!)
Choosing the right snacks for your first hike ensures you stay energized and hydrated. Opt for lightweight, non-perishable foods high in energy and nutrients. Trail mix, with nuts, dried fruit, and seeds, provides a good balance of carbs, healthy fats, and protein. Granola bars or energy bars are convenient and packed with calories. Fresh fruit like apples or bananas offers natural sugars and hydration. Cheese and whole-grain crackers make a savory option, while jerky provides protein. Don’t forget plenty of water and perhaps an electrolyte drink for longer hikes. Pack snacks in resealable bags for easy access and minimal waste.
